Start with the drawing information

Read the title block, legend, revision, drawing number and process area first. Confirm that the drawing revision matches the approved project documents.

Follow the process flow

Begin at the process inlet and trace each main line in the direction of flow. Identify equipment, branches, isolation points, drains, vents and utility connections.

Trace measurement loops

For every pressure, flow, level and temperature loop, locate the sensing element, transmitter, controller, alarm and final control element.

Find automation requirements

Mark motor commands, valve solenoids, feedback switches, permissives, trips and operator indications. These become PLC logic and HMI requirements.

Review and verify

Cross-check the P&ID against equipment lists, instrument indexes, I/O lists and cause-and-effect documents. Record uncertainties as engineering queries instead of guessing.
