Follow a reliable technique for reading P&IDs from the title block and process flow through instruments, controls and safety functions. The objective is to preserve engineering traceability from the approved drawing to the PLC database and operator display.

Check title block and legend

Review the approved drawing legend, revision and project conventions. Identify the process purpose first, then document every item that affects control, monitoring or safety.

Trace the primary process

Work systematically and use consistent tag names. Cross-check equipment, instruments, valves, signal types and operating states with the instrument index and control narrative.

Identify equipment and valves

Prepare a practical engineering worksheet containing the source P&ID tag, PLC signal, SCADA tag, description, engineering unit, range, alarm limits and display requirement.

Follow instrument loops

Avoid guessing symbols, ranges or fail positions. Resolve drawing conflicts through the project review process and keep changes synchronized across the P&ID, I/O list and software.

Record automation requirements
