Develop effective SCADA process screens using clear hierarchy, consistent symbols, restrained colour and operator-centred HMI principles. The objective is to preserve engineering traceability from the approved drawing to the PLC database and operator display.

Define the operator task

Review the approved drawing legend, revision and project conventions. Identify the process purpose first, then document every item that affects control, monitoring or safety.

Build the screen layout

Work systematically and use consistent tag names. Cross-check equipment, instruments, valves, signal types and operating states with the instrument index and control narrative.

Choose consistent symbols

Prepare a practical engineering worksheet containing the source P&ID tag, PLC signal, SCADA tag, description, engineering unit, range, alarm limits and display requirement.

Use colour with purpose

Avoid guessing symbols, ranges or fail positions. Resolve drawing conflicts through the project review process and keep changes synchronized across the P&ID, I/O list and software.

Review usability

Apply the method to pumps, tanks, conveyors, utilities, water systems and process skids. Test normal operation, communication loss, bad quality, trips and recovery behavior.

Practical training exercise

Select one approved P&ID loop and develop its I/O list, PLC tags, SCADA symbols, faceplate requirements, alarm definitions and test checklist. This creates a complete traceable example for project practice.
