ABB ACS580 control macros: wiring, simulator and Drive Composer setup

A macro is a ready-made set of parameter defaults for one wiring style. Pick the closest one in 96.04, wire it as shown, check a handful of parameters in Drive Composer, and most of the commissioning is done. Open any macro below for its terminal map, wiring diagram and step-by-step setup.

Quick answer

Select a macro with 96.04 Macro select and confirm it in 96.05. All macros start in scalar control except ABB standard (vector). Changing macro resets everything except motor data and changes what each terminal does.

Which macro do I need?

Answer three questions and we will open the matching macro below.

1. How is the drive started?

2. Where does the speed come from?

Configure the ABB standard macro in Drive Composer

Drive Composer entry / pro
0 of 8 steps done
Before you start
  • ACS580 powered, STO terminals closed (factory jumpers in place)
  • PC with Drive Composer and a USB cable to the assistant control panel
  • Motor nameplate data and the wiring done as in the diagram
1

Connect

Plug a USB cable from the PC into the USB port on the drive's assistant control panel, open Drive Composer (entry or pro) and connect. The drive appears in the drive list.

2

Back up first

Save the current parameters to a file (entry) or take a full Backup (pro) so you can return to the old setup.

3

Enter motor data

Open Parameters › group 99 and enter 99.06–99.11 from the nameplate. Leave 99.04 on Scalar unless the load needs vector control.

4

Select the macro

Open group 96, set 96.04 Macro select to ABB standard, and confirm 96.05 Macro active shows the same name. Every non-motor parameter now returns to the macro defaults.

5

Check the I/O mapping

Open the parameters in the table below and confirm each one points to the input shown. Change only what your wiring differs on.

6

Tune ramps, presets and limits

Set acceleration and deceleration times, preset speeds or setpoints, and min/max limits in group 30 (30.11–30.14).

7

Test with the Monitor window

Add 01.06 Output frequency, 01.07 Motor current, 10.02 DI delayed status and 12.12 AI1 scaled value. Operate each switch and watch the matching bit and value change.

8

Save and document

Write 96.07 Parameter save manually = Save, then use Print to keep a PDF parameter record (as on the Softwell lab printouts). In pro, compare against the backup to list every change.

Expected result: 96.05 Macro active shows ABB standard, every row in the check table matches, and each switch changes the matching bit in 10.02 DI delayed status.

Wiring for the Hand/PID macro. Digital inputs are fed from the drive’s own +24 V (terminal 10) with DGND–DCOM bridged by the factory jumper. Set S1 to U for 0–10 V on AI1 and S2 to I for 4–20 mA on AI2, matching 12.15 and 12.25.

Configure the Hand/PID macro in Drive Composer

Open group 96, set 96.04 Macro select to Hand/PID, and confirm 96.05 Macro active shows the same name.

Expected result: 96.05 Macro active shows Hand/PID, every row in the check table matches, and each switch changes the matching bit in 10.02 DI delayed status.

Energy saving calculator (fans and pumps)

For centrifugal loads, power falls with the cube of speed (affinity law). Change the numbers to your own motor, hours and tariff.

Full speed (throttle or damper)

Power at this speed
Saving vs full speed
Yearly saving

Estimate only: real savings depend on the system curve, static head and motor efficiency. The drive measures actual savings in group 45.

Ramp-time calculator

ACS580 ramp times are full-scale: the time to go from zero to 50 Hz. Enter yours to see how long the drive takes to reach a target.

Beyond macros: a real Softwell configuration

On site, many drives start from ABB standard and are then reshaped. In one Softwell parameter sheet used for ACS880, ACS580 and ACS560 dosing and valve drives, control location EXT1 takes start and speed from a PLC over Profinet (20.01 Fieldbus A, 22.11 FB A ref1), EXT2 is a hardwired backup on DI1 with AI1 as reference, and DI3 switches between them through 19.11.

It is the Hand/Auto idea with a fieldbus in place of the Auto wiring, and building it from scratch is one of the day-three exercises in our course.

Frequently asked questions

How many control macros does the ACS580 have?

The ACS580 standard control program manual in our library lists 10: ABB standard, ABB standard (vector), 3-wire, Alternate, Motor potentiometer, Hand/Auto, Hand/PID, PID, Panel PID and PFC. Newer firmware adds more, so check the manual for your version.

Which parameter selects the macro?

96.04 Macro select. 96.05 Macro active shows which one is in use.

Do macros use scalar or vector control?

All macros use scalar control by default except ABB standard (vector). You can switch any macro to vector in Primary settings › Motor › Control mode.

What happens to my settings when I change macro?

Everything except motor data returns to the new macro's defaults and the I/O functions change, so check wiring and back up first.
