ABB ACS580 standard macro: wiring, presets and Drive Composer setup

The factory-default macro: a general-purpose 2-wire setup with one signal for start/stop, one for direction, and three constant frequencies. This guide gives the terminal map, a wiring diagram and the exact Drive Composer sequence we use on the Softwell bench.

Quick answer

Select it with 96.04 Macro select = ABB standard (Menu › Primary settings › Macro). It runs in scalar (frequency) control by default. Changing macro resets every setting except motor data, so back up first.

Where the ABB standard macro fits

Conveyors and machines

A maintained selector switch runs the motor; a second switch reverses it.

Fans with fixed duty points

Three preset frequencies cover low, medium and high without a potentiometer.

First commissioning

Every ACS580 ships with it, so it is the baseline to test wiring and motor data.

Wiring for the ABB standard macro. Click a switch or push-button in the drawing to trace its signal. Digital inputs are fed from the drive’s own +24 V (terminal 10) with DGND–DCOM bridged by the factory jumper. Set S1 to U for 0–10 V on AI1 and S2 to I for 4–20 mA on AI2, matching 12.15 and 12.25.

Operate the inputs as an operator or PLC would. The wiring diagram above, the relay lamps and the output frequency respond the way the macro defines. Values come from the Softwell bench drive.

Configure the ABB standard macro in Drive Composer

Drive Composer entry / pro
0 of 8 steps done
Before you start
  • ACS580 powered, STO terminals closed (factory jumpers in place)
  • PC with Drive Composer and a USB cable to the assistant control panel
  • Motor nameplate data and the wiring done as in the diagram
1

Connect

Plug a USB cable from the PC into the USB port on the drive's assistant control panel, open Drive Composer (entry or pro) and connect. The drive appears in the drive list.

2

Back up first

Save the current parameters to a file (entry) or take a full Backup (pro) so you can return to the old setup.

3

Enter motor data

Open Parameters › group 99 and enter 99.06–99.11 from the nameplate. Leave 99.04 on Scalar unless the load needs vector control.

4

Select the macro

Open group 96, set 96.04 Macro select to ABB standard, and confirm 96.05 Macro active shows the same name. Every non-motor parameter now returns to the macro defaults.

5

Check the I/O mapping

Open the parameters in the table below and confirm each one points to the input shown. Change only what your wiring differs on.

6

Tune ramps, presets and limits

Set acceleration and deceleration times, preset speeds or setpoints, and min/max limits in group 30 (30.11–30.14).

7

Test with the Monitor window

Add 01.06 Output frequency, 01.07 Motor current, 10.02 DI delayed status and 12.12 AI1 scaled value. Operate each switch and watch the matching bit and value change.

8

Save and document

Write 96.07 Parameter save manually = Save, then use Print to keep a PDF parameter record (as on the Softwell lab printouts). In pro, compare against the backup to list every change.

Expected result: 96.05 Macro active shows ABB standard, every row in the check table matches, and each switch changes the matching bit in 10.02 DI delayed status.

Parameters to check after selecting the macro

Open each one in Drive Composer and confirm it points to the input shown. Change only what your wiring differs on.

Bench exercise

ACS580-01-03A4-4 bench drive 30 minutes
  1. Wire a maintained switch to DI1 and a 10 kΩ pot across +10V, AI1 and AGND.
  2. Run the motor and watch 01.06 output frequency follow the pot.
  3. Close DI3 and check the drive jumps to 28.26 (5 Hz on the Softwell bench).
  4. Toggle DI5 and time the difference between ramp set 1 and ramp set 2.
Checkpoint

Back up with Drive Composer before switching macro on a running machine: the new macro rewrites the I/O functions, and wiring that was safe before may now start the motor.

Test yourself: ABB standard macro

Five quick questions on the terminal map. Answers show straight away.

1. In the ABB standard macro, what does AI1 (terminal 2) do?

2. In the ABB standard macro, what does DI1 (terminal 13) do?

3. In the ABB standard macro, what does DI2 (terminal 14) do?

4. In the ABB standard macro, what does DI3 (terminal 15) do?

5. In the ABB standard macro, what does DI4 (terminal 16) do?

Frequently asked questions

Is ABB standard the default macro on the ACS580?

Yes. A new ACS580 starts in the ABB standard macro, and the Softwell lab drive still reports it in 96.05 Macro active.

How do I get three preset speeds?

Use DI3 and DI4 as a binary pair: 10 selects 28.26, 01 selects 28.27, 11 selects 28.28, and 00 returns to the AI1 reference.

Does it use vector control?

No, it uses scalar control. Pick the ABB standard (vector) macro if you need speed control in rpm with the motor model.
